Imagine having your worst nightmare come true – lost on a mountain, no water, where your dog has cut its paws, and is too heavy to carry. Then you’re saved by a boy scout age 12 who saves the day!
This is just what happened to JD, Aimee, and their dog smokey, when they were on a 2 mile hike, which turned into a 7 mile disaster. Their phones were dead, and it was getting dark on the Waimanu Trail above Pearl City, Honolulu.
As luck would have it they came across David King, a 12 year old scout, and his Mum, Christine.
When David asked if they needed help, they said ‘yes’ they did. He then lent a hand, like any boy scout would.
After trying to carry Smokey on his back, and realising the dog was just too heavy, he suggested making a stretcher out of two tree branches and their T-shirts, slung between the sticks through the arm and neck holes.
Between them they carried the dog back to the car park.
David said he loves the feeling of joy he gets from helping others, despite being tired from walking 12 miles before rescuing the dog. He had been completing his 15 mile Hike Merit badge that day. What an amazing person!
