Lockdowns return to Europe as Covid surges
Will Europe’s fourth wave hit the UK
Austria will become the first European country to go back into full lockdown and the first to make Covid vaccination compulsory.
“This is not easy for us, but in view of the number of infections we have to take such measures,” Alexander Schallenberg, the Austrian chancellor, told a press conference on Friday, adding: “It hurts me to have to impose any restrictions.”
Europe is yet again at the center of another Covid wave infections apparently sweeping across Europe causing more border closures and pushing the hospitals to the brink of collapse.
Germany’s coronavirus situation is so grave that a lockdown, including for people who have been vaccinated, cannot be ruled out, the health minister Jens Spahn said on Friday. “We are in a national emergency,” he told a news conference.
Meanwhile Dutch healthcare officials said they had begun delaying operations for some cancer and heart patients to free up space in intensive care units during a record wave of Covid-19 infections.
